Does my phone support eSIM? Check before you buy a travel plan
By DMarketplace · · 2 min read
A travel eSIM only works on a phone that supports eSIM and accepts plans from other providers. Both points are quick to check, and checking them first matters: once an eSIM is delivered, a phone that cannot use it is not a reason for a refund.
iPhone: model and carrier lock
Apple lists the iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, iPhone XR and later models as eSIM-capable. If you do not know your model, Apple's model guide explains how to identify it in Settings.
Some regional versions differ. Apple notes that in China mainland only certain recent models support eSIM, and that certain models sold in Hong Kong and Macao use two physical SIM cards instead.
- Open Settings, then General, then About.
- Look at Carrier Lock. If it says No SIM restrictions, the iPhone accepts eSIMs from other providers.
- If it shows a lock, ask the carrier that sold the phone to unlock it before you travel.
Android: eSIM support and carrier lock
On Android, eSIM support depends on the model and sometimes on the version sold in your country. Google, for example, supports an eSIM next to a physical SIM from the Pixel 3a onwards, with exceptions such as the Pixel 3a sold in Japan.
A quick test on most phones: open the SIM settings and look for an option to add or download an eSIM. If the option is missing, the phone or its software version probably does not support eSIM.
Android has no single screen that shows a carrier lock. If you bought the phone on contract or from a carrier, ask that carrier whether it is unlocked.
Other things to check before you buy
- Free space for another eSIM. Most phones store several eSIM profiles, but only one or two can be active at the same time.
- Coverage. A plan for one country works only there; a regional plan lists every country it covers on the product page.
- Data only. Our travel eSIMs include mobile data but no phone number, so calls and SMS stay on your home line.
- Validity start. Some plans start counting at installation, others at the first connection at your destination.
